Secondary peat swamp forest on former agricultural land. Research focuses on regeneration and carbon dynamics compared to primary forests.

Site Description

The Zungarococha site is a 12-year-old secondary peat swamp forest that developed on a previously abandoned banana plantation and pasture. Climatic conditions are the same as for the Quistococha site, as these sites are not very far from each other. The main tree species were Mauritia flexuosa, Symphonia globulifera, Tabebuia aurea, Hevea brasiliensis, and, in some parts, Clusia species as well.

Several sampling campaigns have been conducted at this site (2023 & 2024), each encompassing soil flux measurements and soil sampling for chemical and microbial analyses. Additionally, tree stem cores, cryptogams, and leaves of various species were also collected in at least two sampling campaigns conducted during the dry and wet seasons of 2023 and 2024, respectively. This particular sampling aimed for RNA in addition to DNA-based analyses.
