Advancing Global Wetland Forest Research and Education: The LiWeFor Initiative

Our Mission
LiWeFor (Living Labs for Wetland Forest Research) aims to establish and develop a global network of Living Labs dedicated to wetland forest research, education, and management. Our project seeks to raise the level of expertise among researchers and decision-makers, particularly in Estonia, by fostering a robust exchange of knowledge and skills between leading research institutions and our partners.
To achieve these objectives, LiWeFor will conduct four joint field campaigns in tropical wetland forest regions, specifically in Peru and Malaysia, known for their significant greenhouse gas emissions. These campaigns will serve as the core of our educational knowledge transfer, involving training and exploratory research activities that bind together all project partners.
Our Partners
University of Tartu: The recipient institution, benefiting from the expertise and collaboration with our top-class research counterparts.
University of Helsinki: A leading institution in environmental and forest ecosystem research.
Karlsruhe Institute of Technology: Renowned for its cutting-edge research and technological innovations.

Knowledge Transfer
and Capacity Building
Bridging the knowledge and experience gap between donor and recipient partners.
Carbon and Nutrient Management: Developing strategies for temperate and tropical wetland forests with stakeholder and policymaker involvement.
Open Data Repository: Creating a comprehensive repository of greenhouse gas measurements and environmental factors in wetland forests.
Global Living Labs Network: Establishing a foundation for the global expansion of the Living Labs network for wetland forest research and education.
Virtual Framework of Living Labs
LiWeFor envisions a novel virtual framework for Living Labs. This framework will integrate physical reality with virtual presence, including:
Methodology and Documentation: Providing written and video documentation of best practices and teaching materials.
Hybrid Seminars: Facilitating online participation through dedicated streaming, enabling hands-on virtual lectures and interactive sessions.
Local Team Support: Producing instructional videos for local teams in tropical wetland forests, assisting with remote measurements and equipment maintenance.

Building the Future
Our Vision
LiWeFor’s vision is to create a comprehensive, accessible, and collaborative network of Living Labs that enhance wetland forest research and education globally. By integrating ecological, economic, and social science research, we aim to improve wetland forestry practices for climate and biodiversity benefits, ultimately contributing to a sustainable future.
